"an attempt to reconcile Darwinian theories with biblical revelation"
On February 3, 2015, the world was horrified when the criminals known as Isis burned alive Jordanian pilot, Moaz al-Kasasbeh in a cage. My horror was doubled when I learned that this heinous act has its counterpart in the narrations attributed to Prophet Muhammad (S) and His Companions, known as the hadith:
‘Abu al-Nu‘man Muhammad ibn al-Fadl related to us: Hammad ibn Zayd related to us from Ayyub from Ikrimah who said: “Ali burnt some people (apostates) and this news reached Ibn ‘Abbas, who said, “Had I been in his place I would not have burnt them, as the Prophet said, ‘Don’t punish (anybody) with Allah’s Punishment.’ No doubt, I would have killed them, for the Prophet said, ‘If somebody (a Muslim) discards his religion, kill him”‘ (Sahih Bukhari Vol 4, Book 52, No. 260).
How could one of the most righteous companions of Prophet Muhammad (S), Ali (RA), have burnt alive apostates? The other companion, Ibn Abbas, was apparently not much better. He would have “killed them” as well, if not burned them!
How do we reconcile this narration with the benevolent injunction of the Quran, “Let there be no compulsion in religion” (2:256)? How are we Muslims to be taken seriously on any human rights platform if narrations such as these taint our belief system?
Before proceeding further, let us examine the history of the hadith. Traditionally, Muslim historians claim that shortly after Prophet Muhammad’s death, hundreds of thousands of narrations attributed to him and his companions began to circulate in the Islamic world causing mass confusion as to how to follow the Prophet’s example.
While Christians have been at odds for 2,000 years since the time of Paul and James regarding how to interpret the teachings of Jesus, Muslims, too, have suffered a serious split in whether Hadith (sayings of the Prophet) is or is not part of the Islamic doctrine. And some Muslims regard those who reject the Hadith as infidels, just like how some non-Catholics regard Catholics as infidels.
Anyway, trust me, this clash of doctrine between Muslim and Muslim, Christian and Christian, Muslim and Christian, Jew and non-Jew, etc., will go on till the end of time when every single one of them will discover that they were actually all wrong and no one was right after all.
Enter the six most prominent hadith scholars 200-300 years after the Prophet’s death: Imams Bukhari, Muslim, Abu Dawood, ibn Majah, Tirmizi, and Nisai. (These are Sunni hadith scholars. Please note the Shias have their own separate scholars and books.) They independently sifted through tens of thousands of reports. In the case of Bukhari, we are told he sifted through 600,000 (!) narrations, settling on a little over 7,000 as “sahih” or authentic.
The methodology used by these scholars to authenticate hadith was “isnad”, or chain of narration of the reports, from generation to generation. The isnad methodology emphasized verification of the character and memory of the narrator, rather than using the Quran or reason as guides. Can Chinese whispering be taken as solid evidence for any serious belief system?
In any case, the six Sunni hadith collections, as they stand today, are considered unquestionable by traditional religious authorities and have become the basis of Islamic jurisprudence.
After all, there were originally 700,000 Hadith, which were eventually whittled down to less than 7,000 — or less than 1%. Hence, if you consider more than 99% of the Hadith as nonsense, is there not a possibility that a couple more could also be nonsense?
That is all these people are saying. Look at them again. Ponder. And then come to a sensible conclusion regarding if more than 693,000 Hadith are fake, could there possibly be a few more within that 6,000 plus remaining ‘sahih’ (confirmed or accepted) Hadith that are equally fake?
If you think no, then no! If some people think yes, then let them think yes. Why get upset when you think no and they think yes? Why must they also think no just because you think no? Let them think yes. You can go ahead and think no. Why start screaming infidel?
Why Is White Good while Black Is Bad? Why do we say we have seen the light when something good happen to us? And why is everything bad associated with black? Before Light there is Darkness... Does God create Darkness before Light???
Before Light there is Darkness. If anyone is stating that darkness CANNOT be created is stating that God has limited powers and doesn't possess absolute knowledge, nor the ability to create certain things.
I form the light, out of darkness: I make peace and create evil: I the LORD do all these things. Isaiah 45:7 King James Version.
Indeed, what are we to do with hadith that prescribe death for blasphemy and apostasy? Should we stone adulterers as numerous “sahih” narrations mention or choose the Quranic path of forgiveness for the repentant adulterer (26:68-71) and decidedly non-lethal punishment for the habitual adulterer (24:2)?
Should we marry off a nine-year old to a 53-year-old man according to the Bukhari tradition, or wait until the poor child is of sufficient age to sign a legal contract, consent and to handle finances (4:6, 4:19, 4:21). Are not thousands of innocent lives being destroyed in these unholy unions every year? Others such as this justify Isis sex slavery and “sexual jihad”:
Narrated Abdullah, “We used to participate in the holy wars carried on by the Prophet and we had no women (wives) with us. So we said (to the Prophet ). “Shall we castrate ourselves?” But the Prophet forbade us to do that and thenceforth he allowed us to marry a woman (temporarily) by giving her even a piece of cloth, and then he recited: “O you who believe! Do not make unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you” (Sahih Bukhari Book 60, No. 139)
Aside from these human rights violations, some sahih narrations are so pornographic in nature that one is left bewildered as to what guidance is intended and who was the voyeur behind the narration. See for yourself but please be forewarned.
Traditionalists argue that without the narrations, our religion is not complete. They frequently cite verses such as this: 33:21: “Verily, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example, for everyone who looks unto Allah and the Last Day, and remembers Allah much.”
But, which hadith books should I use to understand the Prophet’s example, the Sunni or Shia ones? Does not the Quran compare sectarians to idolaters 30:31-32? Did the Prophet (S) judge other than with the Quran? Was his character anything but the Quran?
The Prophet said, “Do not write down anything from me except the Quran.” [Ahmed, Vol. 1, Page 171, and Sahih Moslim, Zuhd, Book 42, Number 7147]
Ibn Saeed Al-Khudry reported that the messenger of God had said, “Do not write anything from me except Quran. Anyone who wrote anything other than the Quran shall erase it.”
From Ibn Hanbal: “Zayd Ibn Thabit (The Prophet’s closest revelation writer) visited the Khalifa Mu’aawiyah (more than 30 years after the Prophet’s death), and told him a story about the Prophet. Mu’aawiyah liked the story and ordered someone to write it down. But Zayd said, ‘The messenger of God ordered us never to write anything of his Hadith’.”
The famous book, ‘Ulum Al-Hadith’ by Ibn Al-Salah, reports a Hadith by Abu Hurayra in which Abu Hurayra said the messenger of God came out to us while we were writing his Hadiths and said, “What are you writing?” We said, “Hadiths that we hear from you, messenger of God.” He said, “A book other than the book of God?” We said, “Should we talk about you?” He said, “Talk about me, that would be fine, but those who will lie will go to Hell. Abu Hurayra said, we collected what we wrote of Hadiths and burned them in fire.”
In the famous book, ‘Taq-yeed Al-Ilm’, Abu Hurayra said, the messenger of God was informed that some people are writing his Hadiths. He took to the pulpit of the mosque and said, ”What are these books that I heard you wrote? I am just a human being. Anyone who has any of these writings should bring it here.” Abu Hurayra said we collected all these and burned them in fire.
Ibn Hanbal in his Musnad book, narrates a Hadith in which Abdullah Ibn Omar said, “The messenger of God one day came out to us as if he was going to depart us soon and said, ‘When I depart you (die), hold to the book of God, prohibit what it prohibits and accept as halal what it makes halal’.”
Again, in the book ‘Taq-yeed Al-Ilm’, Abu Saeed Al-Khudry said, “I asked the messenger of God a permission to write his Hadiths, but he refused to give me a permission.”
In The Beginning...
Genesis 1:1 [Tanakh] "In the beginning Elohim created the heaven and the earth ..." [English Bible - King James Version] "In the beginning God created the Heaven and the Earth ... " [Arabic transliteration] "Fee al-badi' khalaqa Allahu as-Samaawaat wa al-Ard ... "
And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying … he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him. Leviticus 24:13-16
Because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die … And the LORD struck the child that Uriah’s wife bare unto David, and it was very sick … And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. 2 Samuel 12:14-18
All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men … whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. Matthew 12:31-32
But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness Mark 3:29
And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. Luke 12:10
Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and his doctrine be not blasphemed. 1 Timothy 6:1
I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan. Revelation 2:9
Thousands of years ago people already believed in God, religion, and so on. Why did they believe in God? Had they ever met God? Did God come down to earth and make his existence known? Had people died and met God and came back to earth to tell the people that they met God so God does exist?
Nothing of that sort. People just believe in God because they want to believe in God. They feel ‘comfortable’ believing in God. They are not comfortable feeling that they are going to die and when they die that is the end of everything, nothing more is going to happen. People need to believe that death is not final or the end but just the beginning. They might live for a few years on earth but after they die they will live on forever in a special place which is far better than this miserable place called earth (or get reincarnated as something or someone better).
So, since birth, people have been indoctrinated into believing something that cannot be proven. And you believe what is comfortable to you, whether it is true or false. There are so many religions and if only one is the true religion that would mean all other religions are Fake News. Muslims insist that Muhammad is the last Prophet of God and that Islam is the true religion. That would mean all the other religions are the result of Fake News.
If what Muslims believe is true, and they insist it is, then Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, and many more are all Fake News. Christians, however, will insist their religion is true while all others, Islam included, are Fake News. And Atheists will say all religions, without exception, are Fake News and that God is as real as Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy.
Do They Know Its Christmas????
So, Fake News has created many fake religions but those who believe will insist their religion is not fake. In fact, they will insist their religion is true while all the others are Fake News.
So is Good Friday, Christmas, etc Fake????
For Christians, Good Friday is a crucial day of the year because it celebrates what we believe to be the most momentous weekend in the history of the world. Ever since Jesus died and was raised, Christians have proclaimed the cross and resurrection of Jesus to be the decisive turning point for all creation. Paul considered it to be “of first importance” that Jesus died for our sins, was buried, and was raised to life on the third day, all in accordance with what God had promised all along in the Scriptures (1 Corinthians 15:3).
On Good Friday we remember the day Jesus willingly suffered and died by crucifixion as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins (1 John 1:10). It is followed by Easter, the glorious celebration of the day Jesus was raised from the dead, heralding his victory over sin and death and pointing ahead to a future resurrection for all who are united to him by faith (Romans 6:5).
Still, why call the day of Jesus’ death “Good Friday” instead of “Bad Friday” or something similar? Some Christian traditions do take this approach: in German, for example, the day is called Karfreitag, or “Sorrowful Friday.” In English, in fact, the origin of the term “Good” is debated: some believe it developed from an older name, “God’s Friday.” Regardless of the origin, the name Good Friday is entirely appropriate because the suffering and death of Jesus, as terrible as it was, marked the dramatic culmination of God’s plan to save his people from their sins.
In the same way, Good Friday is “good” because as terrible as that day was, it had to happen for us to receive the joy of Easter. The wrath of God against sin had to be poured out on Jesus, the perfect sacrificial substitute, in order for forgiveness and salvation to be poured out to the nations. Without that awful day of suffering, sorrow, and shed blood at the cross, God could not be both “just and the justifier” of those who trust in Jesus (Romans 3:26). Paradoxically, the day that seemed to be the greatest triumph of evil was actually the deathblow in God’s gloriously good plan to redeem the world from bondage.
Paul wrote his first epistle in 48 and in 58 he wrote the final epistle. In 66 (some say in 64), Nero executed both Paul and Peter in Rome, the same year of the Jewish revolt.
In 70, the Romans totally destroyed Jerusalem and burned it to the ground so that nothing remains, the same year that the Gospel of Mark was written.
It was not until 30 years later that the Gospels of Matthew and Luke were written and 50 years later into the second century that the Gospel of John was written (almost 100 years after Jesus).
In other words, what the Christians call the New Testament was written after the destruction of the Jesus Movement as well as the Jerusalem Church.
Furthermore, the New Testament breaks from what Christians call the Old Testament and effectively creates a new version of Christianity that departs from the Christianity of the Jesus Movement and the Jerusalem Church.
In 313, Emperor Constantine issued the Edict of Milan followed by the Nicaea Council in 325 in Turkey and the Council of Hippo Regius in 398 in Algeria.
Okay, with those significant dates and events in mind, what does all this mean to the Muslims? And by understanding the Muslim view regarding these events maybe you can begin to understand the fierce opposition from Muslims regarding the Malay Bible saying that Jesus is the Son of Allah, as opposed to Jesus is the Son of God.
Over the 300 years since the ascension of Jesus, the Christian world was in disarray. So, in 325, Constantine brought together 2,000 bishops from all over the world with instructions that they would not be allowed to go home until they resolve the issue of the nature of Jesus and his relationship to God.
The discord of the Christian world was whether Jesus was human or divine.
After months of quarrelling and arguing, the Council handed to Constantine what is now known as the Nicene Creed, outlining for the first time the official and sanctioned orthodox beliefs of the Christian Church.
“He is Light from Light, true God from true God, and begotten not made, of the same substance as the Father.” Jesus is literally the Son of God (as Paul said) and not allegorically the Son of God (as the Jesus Movement of Jerusalem said).
Basically, this doctrine is based on the Letters of Paul.
Is the crucifixion of Jesus a Tragic Day??? Gone too Soon!!!
Those who disagreed with this Creed were immediately banished from the Christian Empire and some even put to death for the crime of heresy and/or blasphemy and their teachings banned.
In 398, another group of bishops assembled in Hippo Regius to canonise what Christians today call the New Testament. More than half the 27 books of the New Testament are either by Paul or about Paul.
It must also be noted that there was serious conflict between Paul and the Jesus Movement of Jerusalem regarding other matters of doctrine. The Jesus Movement argued that Jesus came to fulfil the Laws of Moses, not to abolish them like what Paul argued. And to become a Christian you must get circumcised and you are not exempted from circumcision like Paul said, who himself was circumcised.
In 57, James and the apostles demanded that Paul come to Jerusalem to face the Apostolic Council to answer to the charge of deviant teachings. In Paul’s own account of the meeting in a letter to the Galatians soon after that, Paul said that he was ‘ambushed by false believers’. Paul, who was clearly upset and at odds with the Council, left Jerusalem for Rome after that to continue with his own church that was considered a breakaway church from the Church of Jerusalem.
And this is the bone of contention for the Muslims. Jesus as the Son of God has a literal meaning and not, as some Christians say, is merely allegorical. Paul (version of Christianity) meant it literally and not allegorically, and the Church of Jerusalem disagreed with this and called it deviant teachings.
And this was why Paul was ousted from the Church of Jerusalem, after which he set up his own church in Rome, and considered a deviant church by the Church of Jerusalem. James and the Apostolic Council insisted that Jesus was human and not divine and to say otherwise is blasphemous. So can you imagine the outrage of the Muslims when you say that Jesus is the Son of Allah? Even James, the brother of Jesus, was outraged...
But the Lord shall Return... Come Again!!!
Soteriology means: (i) the theological doctrine of salvation as effected by Jesus, or (ii) the branch of Christian theology that deals with salvation as the effect of a divine agency.
According to Buddhist belief, there is no such avenue of relying or having faith in a saviour or Almighty to reserve for oneself a nice place in the correct upmarket housing estate in one’s after-life. For a start, there is no Saviour or Almighty in Buddhism. To Buddhists, Buddha is not the saviour but a teacher who had shown them the Truths. The rest is up to them. What about icons or idols, thus making people suspect Buddhism is all about idol worship? Well, what about photographs of our loved ones? In times before the camera was invented, people created statue or statuettes to remind them of loved or respected ones. Also, a statuette is used as an object by Buddhist in meditation. They can also use any object, like a flower, light, etc to focus their minds. But wait a minute, what about the supplication of hands before a Buddha statue in the traditional Asian gesture of prayer? Surely that must be idol worship! Hmmm, why do Indians, Thais, Burmese, Cambodians, Laotians, Javanese, and Balinese put up their hands like so when they meet someone, even a stranger? It's just an Indian cultural mark of respect, not unlike the courteous bow of the Chinese, Japanese or Koreans. Even Malaysians perform such a gesture of respect for their rulers (except for one who would slap you if you do it - he believes you are 'praying' to him). So when a Buddhist puts up his or her hands in a prayer-like manner, it's a mark of respect to their 'teacher', Buddha. Sometimes you can see this gesture in Karate or Tae Kwon Do when opponents make their customary gestures of respect before they start to spar with each other.
While Buddhist belief do not dismiss the existence of ‘devas’ or ‘gods’, it treats those ‘devas’ as just another form of life, a species that’s like homo sapiens, dolphins or butterflies – perhaps with a longer life span like say, zillions of years, and possessing supranormal properties (that modern science hasn’t come to grips with yet), but nonetheless subject to the Buddhists’ belief of continuous cycle of life, sufferings, death and reincarnation, called samsara.
Yes, those ‘devas’ will eventually perish too, like all of us - no exception.
Buddhists know one thing, they will all end up in eternal wandering in samsara, the endless cycle of birth and suffering and death and rebirth, unless they break the tedious endless cycle by their own efforts. In other words, Buddhists believe their fates are not dependent upon the mercy or goodwill of those ‘devas’. Their ability to break free of samsara depends on their own efforts of right actions, right thoughts and right understanding of the Truths.
But it's a religion that has in recent years terrified the clerics and officials of other religions, especially the Christian Church, because of its paradoxical simplicity in its beliefs and difficulty in practice. Many centuries ago, it faced the same problem with Hinduism, which it was gradually replacing in Indian beliefs, until some smart Hindu priests claimed that Buddha was an avatar (reincarnated human form) of Lord Vishnu. Buddhism was thus absorbed into Hinduism, with its spread as a new religion checked.
The missing Years of Jesus... Jesus meets Buddha!!!
In life’s journey Down a corridor, Eeryone arrives Soon at the door Marked DEATH; Not one can say I am turning back Or here I’ll stay; Long corridor, Short corridor, All must open The inevitable door; Wat lies behind? And upon His Return, Will He be teaching Enlightenment???
There’s a serious gap in the bible that omits almost 20 years of Jesus’ life. So where did he go and what did he get up to during this time?
In Time It's History
Historians consider the first century as one of the best-documented periods in ancient history. There were actually many Roman and Jewish writers of that period and much of their work — volumes, in fact — still remain intact until today. Hence there should be no reason why an important historical figure or historical event of that time should not be reported in what some may consider ‘secular’ records when even less important events of no real historical value are.
However, we have to depend on the four Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John to find any reference to Jesus because none of the secular records mention him. The Gospels were all written over more than 100 years and after Paul’s letters. So that would place them between the years 58 and almost 200. Mark’s Gospel has to be after the year 70 because he makes references to the Jewish-Roman War and the destruction of the temple that happened between the years 66 and 70.
Luke 1:1-2 says his story is handed down to his generation so that means he is not an eyewitness but is writing from hearsay. Matthew also lets slip that he is writing long after the event and was not a witness to the events.
Matthew quotes Jesus as telling Peter that ‘upon this rock I will build a church’. Peter must have been very confused with this statement because churches did not exist yet at that time so no one had any clue of that concept. So Matthew was not writing about the past but about the ‘present’ when churches already existed then.
Matthew 10.38 quotes Jesus as saying ‘He who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me’. However, Jesus did not know yet at that time that he would be arrested and crucified. John 10:17 then quotes Jesus as saying ‘Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I may take it up again’ when even Jesus did not know yet that that was going to happen.
Luke 2:1-4 says Jesus was born in the year of the universal tax census when Augustus was Caesar and Quirinius was the governor of Syria. Mathew, Mark and John do not mention this, though. The error here is that Quirinius was not the governor then and he became governor in 6 CE. And, according to the Roman records, the first census was done during the reign of Vespasian in the year 74 CE.
Matthew then says that Jesus was born during the reign of Herod the Great who died four years before Jesus was supposed to have been born and ten years earlier than what Luke reported.
Mark says that just weeks before his death Jesus travelled to Jerusalem followed by a multitude of people. He travels to Galilee, then Capernaum, crosses the Jordan River, and goes to Jericho, Bethphage and Bethany before entering Jerusalem.
John, however, says that Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, ‘which caused a great sensation’, and this enraged the Chief Priest and Pharises, who then plotted to kill him. From that time on Jesus stopped travelling openly and went into hiding.
According to Mark, Matthew and Luke, Jesus died at 3.00pm on the afternoon of Passover, which is the 15th of Nisan of the Jewish calendar. John, however, says that Jesus died on the day before Passover, which is on the 14th of Nisan. However, all four Gospels ‘agree’ that it was on a Friday. So it is either Friday the 14th or Friday the 15th.
John tells us that when it was time for Jesus to be crucified he would not let anyone else carry the cross up the hill. Matthew, Mark and Luke say that Simon of Cyrene helped Jesus carry the cross.
While on the cross, John tells us that Jesus said ‘woman, behold your son’. Mark and Matthew tells us that Jesus said ‘My god, my god, why have you forsaken me?’ while Luke tells us tell us that Jesus said ‘Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing’.
Matthew, Mark, Luke and John were supposed to be Jews so that means they would know Jewish laws, customs and traditions of that time. However, according to Haim Cohn, the Attorney General of Israel who later became Justice of the Israeli Supreme Court, what the Gospels reported regarding the trial of Jesus could not have happened because it goes against the legal system of that time.
The Gospel writers also do not seem to understand Jewish politics of that time. The Pharisees and the High Priest, who was a Sadducee, would never collaborate and conspire against Jesus because they hated each other and were bitter enemies. The Pharisees, in fact, regarded the High Priest as a Roman running dog or a ‘trained monkey’.
Then the Gospels tell us that Pilate resorted to the Jewish tradition during Passover of releasing the prisoners to the crowd and let the crowd decide who they want killed — Jesus or Barabbas. However, the Jews had no such tradition and neither did the Romans.
Mark tells us that Jesus travelled on the Sea of Galilee where there were storms and high waves. Actually it is just a small fresh-water lake fed by the Jordan River and is about the same width as Lake Geneva in Switzerland and less than one-third its length — and there are no storms and high waves there either.
Mark tells us that Jesus disembarked in Gerasa, which is actually 30 miles inland. Matthew then tells us that Jesus disembarked in Gadara, which is eight miles inland. So both those places are not ports.
It's just too FAR & So Very Far AWAY!!!
Suffice to say that Christians need to do a critical analysis of the Gospels, just like Muslims should do the same with the almost 7,000 Hadith that have been shortlisted from the original 700,000.
If you were to read (and understand what you read) the Bible, you can see that quite a lot of what is in the Qur’an is also in the Bible. And that is why some accuse Muhammad of plagiarising the Bible and dispute the story that the Qur’an was inspired by God.
The only difference is Muslim preachers such as Ahmed Deedat and Zakir Naik honestly reveal what the Quran says while Christians do not. Christians hide the ‘bad parts’ of the Bible and just talk about the ‘good parts’. So they present Christianity as the direct opposite of Islam — whereas Islam and Christianity are exactly the same, save for the issues regarding the Crucifixion, Resurrection, Trinity and Muhammad.
If the Christians were to tell you what is really in the Bible, you will be shocked. The fact that they do not talk about it or do not practice what the Bible demands does not make Christianity a different religion. It just makes Christians bad Christians.
The thing is Christians are better at marketing. They tell you only the good things about their product and the bad things about their competitor’s product. They do not reveal that in reality both products are exactly the same except for one or two knobs and dials.
So, the bottom line is, if you want to solve the ‘problem’, then ban truthful preachers. Allow only preachers who will lie and hide the truth. Or, to be really safe, ban all forms of holy books totally. That would avoid all sorts of problems such as those we are facing now.
RISE & SHINE!!!
